            Impact of the UK Exiting the European Union (Brexit)

            ABS continues to work with partners in Europe to ensure a smooth transition during the exit of the UK from the European Union (EU).

            The UK parliament has accepted a deal agreed between the UK government and the European Union and this has been ratified by the European Union on 29 January 2020. This agreement allows the current rules on trade, travel and business for the UK and EU will continue to apply during the transition period ending 31st December 2020.

            We will keep you informed of any developments on this site and via other direct channels.

            ABS as a Recognized Organization within the EU

            The EU has confirmed that the recognition of ABS as a Recognized Organization (RO) will not be affected by Brexit.

            EU Marine Equipment Directive Certificates

            ABS Europe Limited, a subsidiary of ABS, is an EU Notified Body for the Marine Equipment Directive (MED). Effective January 2020, ABS has new Notified Body Status accredited by the Italian Administration – see below for more information.

            EU MED certificates issued by ABS Europe Ltd. will remain valid at least until their expiration date or 31st December 2020 or until ABSEL suspends Notified Body activity, whichever comes earlier.? You may continue to affix the EU-MED mark of conformity and place EU MED certified products on the EU market under those certificates until that time.

            New Notified Body Status

            Effective January 2020, ABS has new Notified Body Status accredited by the Italian Administration.

            ABS has now completed establishing Notified Body number 2483 within the EU at our ABS Italy SRL location.? It is intended that that the new Notified Body will offer transfer of certification for equipment currently holding valid ABSEL EU-MED conformity certificates.? This will be done prior to any suspension of activity by ABS Europe LTD Notified body.

            New MED Certification requests will be handled by the new ABS Italy SRL notified body.

            EU Monitoring Reporting and Verification

            Our EU Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) services are certified by Greece’s National Accreditation Body, the Hellenic Accreditation System.

            As a result, ABS’ EU MRV compliance services are unaffected by the exit of the UK from EU and to continue as normal.

            Ship Recycling

            ABS is authorized by individual member states to certify compliance with EU Ship Recycling regulation. Irrespective of the outcome of the current negotiations, these services will continue as before.

            ABS Statements of Compliance associated with the Inventory of Hazardous Materials and Ready for Recycling are issued on behalf of the relevant Flag Administration and are also unaffected by the exit of the UK from the EU.
